Bishops Cleeve, Cheltenham
We were commissioned to deliver a single-storey rear extension at this residential property in Bishops Cleeve, with the objective of improving both spatial flow and day-to-day functionality. The existing layout was compartmentalised and did not make the most of the available footprint, prompting the need for a more open and adaptable living arrangement.
The proposal involved the construction of a rear extension to form a bright, open-plan kitchen and dining area, complemented by direct access to the garden via patio steps. As part of the internal reconfiguration, the original kitchen was relocated to create a dedicated utility room, allowing for a more efficient and practical use of internal space.
STRUCTURAL CHALLENGES & TRANSFORMATION
The project required careful structural coordination to facilitate the new extension while maintaining the integrity of the existing building. The removal of substantial sections of the rear wall to create an open-plan layout necessitated the installation of structural steel supports, ensuring that all loads were safely redistributed.
Additional considerations included foundation design for the new extension and integration with the existing structure, alongside managing drainage and ground conditions at the rear of the property. These elements were addressed to ensure long-term durability and compliance with current building standards.
The completed extension has significantly enhanced the overall quality and usability of the home, introducing a spacious and light-filled kitchen and dining area that better aligns with modern living requirements. The open-plan design has improved circulation and created a more sociable environment for everyday use.
The reconfiguration of the original kitchen into a dedicated utility space has further optimised the internal layout, providing clear functional zones within the property.
